The Board That Gave Back to the Future Fans Something to Cheer About
If you are a fan of Back to the Future 2, then you will go gaga over the AirWheel AirBoard. We may not have seen a wheel-less Hoverboard yet, but that did not stop manufacturers in making the next best thing. Unfortunately, we are still not there, but two wheel scooters such as the AirBoard offer the same adrenaline rush (Do NOT try to go over water with this. You will get drenched). This extremely cool looking Segway without wheels is perfect for those who wish to give up the pedestrian life for a more sedate pace.
How Does It Work?
Standing up on this beauty can be a challenge at first, but once you get over your embarrassment (no one likes to feature jelly legs on a cool looking tech!) then you will never get enough of it. To move it forward, all you have to do is lean slightly forward and place pressure on your tippy toes to create force on the pressure sensitive pads. These will react to your weight and the AirBoard will do the rest.
That’s not all. When I was taking mine for a test drive I discovered a super cool feature that really made me fall in love with this minuscule scooter. Just be placing my weight a little to the side, I could make it turn a complete 360 degrees easy. This took a couple of tries though, but I quickly got the hang of it with the integrated self balancing technology (even I’m not that graceful after all). In fact, you’ll be really surprised how quickly you pick it up even if you have never been on a skateboard in your life.
Great for Kids and Adults Alike – If you have energetic kids like I do, then this board will make an excellent Christmas present. Think about it, would you rather give them a PS4 that will keep them glued to the TV or an awesome (almost) self propelling board for some much needed fresh air? It has worked wonders for mine I can tell ‘ya! The board is also quite durable and the rubber wheels do not rupture on uneven boardwalks no matter how hard it is driven.
Maximum Speed – The reason I say that it is safe for kids is due to its maximum speed. At most, the AirWheel AirBoard can give you 8 MPH and not more than that. Additionally, you can easily cover 7 to maximum 9 miles of terrain without running out of charge and even if it does, carrying the 10kg board will not be an issue for an adult. So, I would advise that you keep a close eye on your kids while they are using it and see they don’t wander off!
Charging Time and Durability – Once the board runs out of juice, the fun does not end there. Just plug it in and the Li-ion batteries will take at most an hour to charge for another round. Plus, it comes with a IP54 rating which basically means that it is water and weather proof. On the other hand, I wouldn’t take it out in a storm dust or otherwise, if I were you. It’s a tech after all.
When the battery is left with 10% charge, it will beep to let you know that it needs to be juiced up and you should probably dismount.
Smooth Ride – Don’t let the small wheels fool you; they are durable enough to withstand a bumpy track without puncturing and respond intuitively to a change in pace and direction. Just by pushing your toes down slightly you can make your AirWheel AirBoard spin a complete 180 degrees. You need to have some mad skills to pull that off on a skateboard, but the AirBoard makes it look effortless!
Safe to Use – Even if you don’t have a great sense of balance, there is no reason why you should be afraid to stand and ride a mini scooter such as this one. Each unit has in-built safety measures that can keep you safe on your board and ensure a smooth ride once you get the hang of it.
Plus, even if you do stumble in the beginning and slip off, the wheels will cut off power for the scooter making it come to a complete stop. Sort of like what a treadmill does when its safety cord is pulled. It will also continue to beep when it stops like that so that you can find it easily, but the flashing LED lights will do that admirably as well.
The unit will also never cut out the power completely once it runs out juice. It will just lean slightly back allowing you to step off with grace rather than stumbling forward and hurting yourself!
The unit is also very environment friendly just like an eco car in the sense that the batteries will try to conserve as much charge as possible. So for instance if you are going downhill or slowing down, it will place charge back in the unit; you don’t need speed or much energy for either, after all so it’s a win-win. The 4 LED lights on top of the AirWheel AirBoard will also keep you informed of the amount of charge left in your unit so:
- 4 LED lights lit – FULL
- 3 LED lights lit – 75% charge left
- 1 or 1 1/2 LED lights lit – 25% charge left
Besides this, it offers miles of fun and is way better than fuel dependent and carbon spewing vehicles that are whittling away at the Ozone layer as we speak.
