Unless you’ve been living out in the boonies with no electricity, smartphone or WIFI to speak of then you won’t know about the alternative mobile revolution. No, we are not talking about smart cell phones here! We are referring to the new personal transportation craze that has taken over the media and the hearts of celebrities by storm. It all started in the Jimmy Fallon show when actor Jamie Foxx rolled in onset on one compelling fellow celebrities and fans alike to scramble to get one of their own. Since then a number of these have hit the market, in which the EROVER Two Wheel Self Balancing Scooter is considered one of the favorites as well.

What is a Personal Transportation Device?

What the heck is a personal transportation device you ask? It’s basically a new form of travel which can get you from A to B without consuming fuel or taking up any parking space. Forget your bike and never lose those car keys ever again! Since these handle-less Segways are portable, you can carry them around with ease wherever you go so choose the ones that suit your mobility requirements. All of them are powered by their own Li-ion batteries that can either be controlled via a remote or from your tippy toes when you are trying to balance on one while riding.

I won’t lie to you, learning to ride an EROVER can be tricky at first and you may get bruises falling off the first couple of times. However, once you get the hang of it, you will have a hard time getting off.

What does that have to do with the EROVER?

The EROVER is one of those innovations that came about when the personal transportation craze took off. Also known as a mini Segway, hoverboard with wheels, portable overboard, etc, this mini and smart self-balancing two-wheeled scooter is easier and more convenient to learn than a motorcycle. It weighs a mere 27 lbs and can handle 15-degree inclines and corners easily. Don’t expect to go too fast on these though. At most, the EROVER can give you speeds up to 6 MPH for 3 hours of continuous riding before the 36V/4.4 Ah Li-ion batteries run out of juice.

All you need to do to get this mini Segway moving is to stand on the board and lean slightly forward. This will place pressure on the footpads which are designed to basically take you wherever you need to go. No, it cannot read your mind. The footpads are connected to an accelerometer which is activated when you step on the footrests.

The EROVER is one of the favorites in this category since it balances (no pun intended) quality construction with an affordable price tag. In other words, you can have fun riding around town without the heartache an empty wallet can cause. The following are some more awesome features that have made the EROVER Two Wheel Self Balancing Scooter stand out for smart mobility junkies:

Simple Construction

The EROVER is designed optimally so the design is very simple and functional making it perfect for newbies. The scooter measures a mere 490 X 3530 X 1100 mm making it quite compact and thus ideal for those who are short on storage space. It’s also more preferable to bulky bikes that’s for sure. At 27 lbs, it is also considered lighter than other two-wheeled scooters in the market, but that does not mean it cannot carry heavy loads. So, even if you are 220 lbs in weight, you can ride one easily without damaging it.

The scooter also features non-pneumatic tires that are 9 inches long and can glide over smooth surfaces without a hitch. They are also easy to maintain as are the bright LED lights that will keep you visible to passing motorists and pedestrians in the dark and illuminate your path as you go. The lights can get scratched easily though so I would think twice before taking it off-road.

Easy Learning Curve

The EROVER performs well on smooth boardwalks and roads. It has been designed to remain safe and offers intuitive navigation along with an easy learning curve for the benefit of riders, new and old. If you are a speed junkie, then you will be disappointed with its max speed which is a mere 6 MPH. If that is fast enough for you, then you will love the alarm feature; this will go off if the EROVER is pushed to go faster than this speed signaling for you to stop.

As mentioned before, you can also tackle small slopes like a boss on one of these babies easily, which is way better than doing so on a stubborn and unpredictable skateboard! This includes a zero-degree turning radius which is a fancy way of saying you can tackle tight corners with ease. Don’t worry, the anti-slip foot pads will not let you fall off when you are turning those sharp corners. In other words, if you love skateboards, rollerblades and can’t afford the uber-expensive Segway, you will go gaga over the EROVER.

Smooth Operator

Even though the EROVER does not come equipped with the gyro technology its competitors have it is still designed to be super-efficient when it comes to detecting and transmitting minuscule movements to the accelerometer. So, when you are teetering back and forth on the footrests, the pressure created will make the board move in that direction. The wheels also feature 2 driver engines that make maneuverability intuitive by allowing riders to speed up, turn, rotate and brake at will using just their feet. The double balancing system will help you find your balance the first few times you ride on one so you will get the hang of it once you practice sufficiently.

Battery and Charge

The Lithium-Ion battery in the EROVER Two Wheel Self Balancing Scooter charges the motor and it charges quickly. At max, it can give you 10 miles of continuous performance before it runs out, but it would be a good idea to charge it before it dies on you. Do your math way ahead of time if you don’t want to stranded; the indicator will only alert you when the battery is almost out of charge! The best part is that you can ride one straight out of the box since each unit comes completely charged. The box will also come with a charger that should be kept in a dry place to ensure it remains damage-free.

Aesthetics

Even though the EROVER cannot give you the performance you need to rip it on the streets, its looks will do a lot for your street cred. The housing itself will attract a number of admiring glances when you coast down the street looking oh so badass. This self-propelled scooter excels in this area and also comes in a variety of colors. Pick one that matches your style and flair to look stylish while you coast.

Price and Recommended Age

Yes, wheeled hoverboards don’t come cheap. In fact, some can easily go over $2000, but not the EROVER. At a mere $319 a pop, this mini Segway is ideal for those who are looking for alternative and budget-friendly mobility options. It’s one of the least expensive units in the market today and thus can suit any budget. However, even if you do buy it, keep it away from toddlers and kids under the age of 14. Even though it balances well, it also depends on the well-formed sense of balance of the rider which pre-pubescent kids can have trouble with.

Performance

When you first turn an EROVER on, DO NOT jump on it with both feet! Step on it one foot at a time to lock it in place and then the other so you can remain balanced. The same should be the case when you are stepping off. Do it one step at a time if you want to look as cool stepping on and you won’t regret being careful.

Concluding notes

When it comes to a smart mobility device, it pays to know your specs. I hope the above-mentioned ones gave you something to chew on and enough to make an informed decision. I can tell you this though, even though the EROVER Two Wheel Self Balancing Scooter is prone to scratches and discourages speeding, it will provide hours of fun and without burning a hole in your wallet like its extremely expensive counterparts. In other words, it will give you years of fun if you take good care of it and will provide a much-needed distraction from a hectic lifestyle. So, you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain if you think about it.
