Sorry to break your bubble, but your phone is one of the dirtiest things you’ll encounter. This wouldn’t be a problem if you weren’t always using it, transferring the germs from it to your mouth, face, and eyes. You don’t have to be a germophobe to realize how worrying this is. After all, who knows where your hands have been? Have you ever thought about who touched your trolley at the grocery store? Or who touched the computer you’re using right now?
Fortunately, you don’t have to be stuck with a legion of microscopic pests on your phone. There is a range of products that can sanitize your device. This sounds great, but it’s bittersweet. As there are so many out there, you could get a disinfectant that is lackluster and doesn’t really sanitize your phone.
Hands down, we think that the PhoneSoap 3 is the gadget for you. It shoots UV rays at your device, killing 99.99% of the germs on it. Unlike its alternatives on the market, it works.
What Is A Phone Sterilizer? The PhoneSoap 3 At A Glance
First, they’re cases, usually moderate in size so that phones of different sizes can fit in them. As we know, the gadget shoots UV rays at whatever is inside of it. Depending on the phone sterilizer you own, the time it takes to do this would differ. However, the PhoneSoap 3 only takes a cool 10 minutes.
The UV rays disinfect a phone’s surface by targeting the building blocks of pathogens, whether they’re a virus or bacterium. The rays disrupt their DNA and break down their cell walls so that they are completely immobilized and most importantly, unable to breed.
If you know anything about science, you’d know that there are 3 types of UV rays. You might be wondering which one the PhoneSoap 3 uses. The sterilizer uses UV-C. It has the shortest wavelength compared to the other two. So, it’s the only variant that has a germicidal effect. Even if you don’t purchase the PhoneSoap 3, you’d see that all phone sterilizers on the market use this ray.
Whether you’re a science geek or not, you’d know that the sun produces UV rays. So, you might be wondering why you can’t place your phone outside, so the sun’s UV-C rays do all the work. Well, life isn’t that simple. The earth’s atmosphere filters them before they can even hit the ground.
Why PhoneSoap? The Company At A Glance
So far so good, but did you know that the PhoneSoap brand has quite the backstory? Ever heard of a little show called Shark Tank?
The Origin Story
Wes LaPorte and Dan Barnes are the brains behind PhoneSoap. It was 2009 and they were both students at Brigham Young University, Utah. LaPorte was a Life Science major while his cousin was majoring in Marketing. Unfortunately, their day was ruined due to their local news channel. To their disgust, a report stated that phones tended to be contaminated with fecal matter. When you think about it, this isn’t surprising as you’re touching all sorts of things, including other people and pets, and then your phone.
LaPorte had access to the science lab, and decided to test the claim out. Shockingly, the report was true. He found legions of nasty bacteria growing on his phone. Disgusted, the two decided to do something about this.
LaPorte and Barnes knew they had to get a phone sterilizer on the market. It had to be good, so they began collecting the funds to get their vision up and running. The duo entered multiple competitions, collecting the money they won to build the PhoneSoap’s prototype.
In terms of what they won for their efforts, this was the Student Innovator Of The Year award which surely foreshadowed the greatness of the PhoneSoap 3. They also won Rice University’s Rice Business Plan Competition for Best Marketing – no surprise as the brand has quite the following.
By 2012, they had won a lot of money from competitions, but this wasn’t enough. As they were getting a lot of support, the two decided to start a Kickstarter. The funding worked as they were able to raise $63,000 for the production of the PhoneSoap’s first-ever batches. Their Kickstarter went better than planned as they overreached their target goal of $18,000. So, if you’re thinking about purchasing one of their products, know that a lot of people believed in them and that their business is currently thriving, so you have nothing to worry about!
The PhoneSoap 1 began manufacturing in China, in 2013. The following year, the product finally entered the market. Unsurprisingly, it did extremely well. It sold over 22,000 units in its first year.
The Rest Is History
Some of the most successful products on the market have been birthed from Shark Tank. That’s why it’s no surprise that LaPorte and Barnes were on the show. PhoneSoap showcased on the program in early 2015.
It did so well that the duo got three offers for their product. Ultimately, they decided to work with Lori Greiner, the queen of the QVC.
With her on the team, PhoneSoap was sold on the QVC network. The product’s sales rose so much that they decided to create the PhoneSoap XL. To do this, they started another Kickstarter that overreached its budget, coming in at $65,000 when the target was $30,000.
As of now, they have a range of sterilizing products under their belt. The PhoneSoap has been upgraded twice, from the 1 to the 2 and now to the 3.
The PhoneSoap 3- A Review
Live A Healthier Life
As discussed, your phone is rather filthy. This can be a health hazard too since there are all sorts of germs on your device. So, there might even be a virus lurking on it. No need to fret as the PhoneSoap 3 kills 99.99% of the germs on your phone. It’s most notable for killing flu-causing viruses.
Although it can target pathogens, it can’t get rid of anything too serious. If they’re basic, everyday germs, they can be dealt with. However, UV-C rays are not strong enough to deal with things like coronavirus.
The unit regularly disinfects itself too, so the chances of bacteria making their way into your PhoneSoap unit is unlikely.
A Multifunctional Disinfectant
The fact that the PhoneSoap 3 disinfects your phone is more than appreciated. After all, it kills 99.99% of the bacteria on it. What makes this even better is the fact that you can charge your device while it’s being sanitized. There is a micro USB port on its side. Along with it, you get a USB-C port as PhoneSoap knows that more and more phones are ditching micro USB ports.
The device was built to be a universal charger. The brand’s vision was to allow users to use it at night and to disinfect it while charging it at the same time.
A Sanitizer For All Phones
You may be wondering if all types of phones can be cleaned by the PhoneSoap 3. The answer is yes! However, it depends on whether they can fit inside it or not. Thankfully, this shouldn’t be an issue as the PhoneSoap 3 was made to accept the largest of phones.
As it’s all a matter of size, you don’t just have to place a phone in there. If you have an iPod or any other electronic device that fits, the PhoneSoap 3 will work its magic.
If you were to purchase the PhoneSoap 1 or 2, you would have noticed that it doesn’t accept several phones. The two are much smaller, so you wouldn’t be able to fit phones released recently into them. As phones kept getting bigger and bigger, it was only natural that the brand decided to eliminate this issue.
Never Be Interrupted
As your phone is locked inside a heavy-duty unit, you may be thinking that disinfecting it overnight is not possible. After all, you won’t be able to hear any notifications, calls, or even your alarm in the morning. This is not true. There are amplifiers inside it.
On the surface, this seems great, but this may worry you. If you know anything about amplifiers, you’d know that it changes the tone of whatever it’s amplifying. So, your alarm won’t sound like your alarm. Don’t fear as the PhoneSoap 3 comes with acoustic amplifiers instead of electric ones, making this an issue you’ll never have to face.
Stay Healthy In Style
The PhoneSoap 3 is quite large. So, when you walk into a room, your eyes will immediately dart to it. Depending on the aesthetics of the space, you don’t want this. The device comes in a multitude of colours, so it’ll compliment the space it’s in. The best thing about this is the fact that its colours are unique. There is gold, lavender, and turquoise, which are unusual hues. This doesn’t mean that you don’t get the standard black or white to choose from, however.
A Disinfect For Your Accessories
As the PhoneSoap device is so big, you have enough space to disinfect your phone with its case on. However, you might not want to do this as it would prevent the UV-C rays from working on your phone’s exterior. So, think about disinfecting the two separately.
If you have a pop socket on, things might get difficult. This is because if you place a phone with a case as well as a pop socket on, it’ll be unusually big. As a result, it won’t fit into your unit.
A Durable Device
The PhoneSoap 3 is extremely durable. Firstly, it comes with a heavy-duty metal body, so denting it up will never be a concern. What’s more, the lights that blast the UV-C rays have quite a long lifespan. They can last 4000 hours which is 166.6 days.
If things don’t go according to plan and your unit’s light runs out before it’s due, don’t worry. The PhoneSoap team will take care of everything for free.
Things You Should Know
Certainly, the PhoneSoap 3 is a product that will make your jaw drop. You might be tempted to make a purchase, but before you do, you may have a couple of questions. We will try to answer these below.
How Do You Set The PhoneSoap 3 Up?
With every purchase, you get a separate pouch with a charging cable. Whenever you want to sterilize a device, plug your unit in. Many users have the impression that the PhoneSoap is wireless, which is wrong. With that done, you can place your phone in it. You’ll see a lightning bolt symbol on top of the unit turn blue. The sterilization happens automatically and when it’s done, the blue light turns off.
When you snap it open, you’ll notice that the PhoneSoap will begin to disinfect itself again. Don’t panic. This is to keep its insides clean. It will only start this process when it detects that you’ve taken your phone out.
After the 10 minutes are done, you can still keep your phone in your unit and charge it.
Does The PhoneSoap 3 Only Clean Electronics?
This question makes sense. You get a chamber that sterilizes whatever you put inside it. So, why not disinfect something other than an electronic device? The truth is, you can! The company says that there is no issue placing whatever you want inside the PhoneSoap as its UV-C rays work on other objects just as it does on phones.
As we established, you can’t fit everything inside it. Although the PhoneSoap 3 isn’t the smallest phone sterilizer, it certainly has a size limit.
So far so good, but depending on the material the object is made of, it might not be disinfected by the UV-C rays that well. This could be because it casts a shadow, blocking the rays from doing their job. The rays work especially well on non-porous surfaces.
How Does The PhoneSoap 3 Differ From Previous Versions?
If you were to place the PhoneSoap 2 and 3 side by side, you’d barely notice any differences. However, the 3 comes with more colour choices. Although this is a great touch, it isn’t as noteworthy as it comes with better cord management. It has a pathway for the charging cable to fit through the middle of the unit. This makes your user experience easier as the PhoneSoap 2 had a wire placement that was a headache to use.
Moreover, the PhoneSoap 3 comes with an additional port. It’s placed on the side of the unit, letting you charge multiple devices at once. Last but not least, the PhoneSoap 3 is much larger than its predecessors, as mentioned.
If you’re wondering whether the germicidal effect between the generations is any different, the answer is no.
How Do You Charge A Phone On The PhoneSoap 3?
As you know, there are multiple charging ports on the device. With the PhoneSoap 3’s easy-to-maneuver pathway, you can charge any device that fits into the unit, as long as it accepts micro USB or USB Type-C cables.
As electricity is fed into the PhoneSoap 3, it’ll charge your phone for as long as it’s plugged in. To some, this may not be an issue, but ideally, a power bank-like feature is the best. Other than the PhoneSoap 3, there is also an XL and a GO. The GO can act as a power bank.
It’s 2020, so more phones are coming with wireless charging. The PhoneSoap can help with this, excluding the 3. The GO comes with a Qi charger, along with the regular USB ports, so wireless charging is not an issue. We might see wireless charging capabilities on the PhoneSoap 4, however.
Is UV-C Safe?
You might be worried about the fact that ultraviolet rays are being shot at your phone. It’s only natural that you might wonder if this is safe or not. Not to worry, the wavelengths have absolutely no effect on electronics. However, it does have an effect on you. Don’t panic, but prolonged exposure to UV-C causes redness and irritation.
This is extremely unlikely, however. Know that this only happens if you’re exposed to it for prolonged periods of time, which is impossible. If you stay just a couple of feet away from the UV-C source, its rays are extremely weak. And even if the rays do get reach you, they’re too weak to pass through your skin. They will only work on the dead layer of skin cells.
Just to put things into perspective, know that UV-C isn’t only used by the PhoneSoap 3. It’s used in all types of sanitization products. It’s even emitted by electronics like your smartphone.
Does The PhoneSoap 3 Come With A Warranty? How Thorough Is It?
Since it’s such a high-tech device, it’s no surprise that your unit comes with an extensive warranty. With every purchase, you get one year of coverage. With any warranty, there are limitations:
- If you used your unit with a non-PhoneSoap product and damaged it, your warranty won’t cover damages
- The same is true for damaging your device by not following the given instructions
- Your warranty won’t cover you if you go through someone who’s not a PhoneSoap agent and they upgrade or expand your product, ultimately damaging your unit
- If you modified your product so much so that it can’t be used, this is another limitation.
If the damage to your PhoneSoap does not fall into the above categories, then you can either get a new PhoneSoap 3 shipped to you, have it sent to the team and get fixed for free, or have your purchase refunded. While these are great options, know that you’ll be paying for shipping.
How Easy Is It To Return A PhoneSoap 3?
Returning your PhoneSoap 3 is simple. Once you receive your product, you can return it in the first 30 days of being shipped. Usually, this is not a problem, but the product could have taken a while to get to you.
To successfully get an exchange, you’ll have to provide the company with the:
- Receipt of your purchase
- The original packaging your PhoneSoap 3 came in
- Your tracking number
- The RMA number of your purchase
There’s an easy-to-follow page on their site. So, exchanges are not a hassle.
Is It Worth It? The Pros And Cons
Having run through everything you need to know, you’re probably ready to make a decision. However, you might still be on the fence, which is understandable. Read ahead as we help you take the leap.
Live A Healthier Life
Knowing that your phone is one of the dirtiest things you’ll encounter is not good news, especially since you’ll be using it all the time. This is why the PhoneSoap’s ability to kill 99.99% of germs on your phone is a major plus point. In lab tests, it’s been found to do a better job at sterilization than even alcohol.
As mentioned, the device can be used to clean all sorts of things, so with the PhoneSoap 3 by your side, you have a fully functional sterilization kit at your helm.
Keep Kids Safe
Due to its germicide capabilities, as well as its ability to clean almost anything, you can make life for your little one much safer as well. If you’re a parent, you know that kids, especially infants, have weak immune systems. As a result, you’ll be constantly disinfecting objects around the house. Now, you can chuck them into your PhoneSoap 3 and relax.
Being able to sterilize your device while charging it is a major plus. It’s great that it comes with a USB-C as well as a micro USB port. We love that it’s a universal charger. However, we’re disappointed that you don’t get wireless charging capabilities. It is 2020, after all.
A Lifetime warranty
Did we mention that you get a lifetime warranty with every purchase you make? The warranty covers the LED lights in your PhoneSoap 3. This is great as they’re the most expensive part of your unit. So, you’ll never have to worry about spending through your nose.
It takes 10 minutes to disinfect your phone, which is considerable. It’s not the fastest but when you compare the device to its competitors, you’d see that quite a few phone sterilizers take 15-30 minutes to get the job done.
The PhoneSoap 3 is big. It dwarfs the PhoneSoap 1 and 2. It’s also much larger than its competitors. The 3’s dimensions are 8.00 x 6.00 x 2.00 inches. Meanwhile, the HoMedics UV- Clean is only 4.6 x 7.3 x 1.1 inches. If you compare it to the Rdfmy UV sanitizer, the PhoneSoap 3 wins again. Its competitor is only 7.9 x 2.8 x 1.6 inches across.
It’s Good Looking
Other phone sterilizers don’t put much effort into their appearance. Not only are they smaller, but they also look alike. So, the fact that the PhoneSoap 3 comes in so many colours is great. These are pretty uncommon too, which is the cherry on top.
You Can Save On Purchases
You may not be a fan of its price, and we’ll discuss this a bit below, but know that PhoneSoap is a major corporation. That’s why they have several sales throughout the year. If you want to sterilize your phone while not breaking the bank, look no further. Just wait it out, a sale will come around.
The PhoneSoap 3 Is Expensive
Without a doubt, the PhoneSoap 3 comes jam-packed with features. It certainly works and has been tested multiple times in lab settings. But does that warrant its price tag? A unit would cost you around $230, sometimes, more. When you realize that there are much cheaper alternatives on the market, you might become apprehensive. And unfortunately for the PhoneSoap 3, its counterparts work just as great.
It’s Not That Fast
Ten minutes to disinfect your phone is pretty good. Some alternatives take around half an hour, after all. However, other alternatives take much less time, like the HoMedics UV Clean. It does the job in a minute. At the end of the day, time is money so we’re left wondering how the more expensive PhoneSoap 3 couldn’t pull such a thing off.
No Sound Feature
We think that the PhoneSoap 3 does one hell of a job. However, we’re not really feeling its LED indicator. The device is the most expensive phone sanitizer on the market, so for its price, you’d expect some type of alarm to tell you when your device has been sanitized.
Its Build Can Be Unreliable
Although we have never faced this issue, we’ve seen countless users say that their PhoneSoap 3 didn’t work. It wouldn’t close properly, which is a major issue as its sensors wouldn’t be able to detect the phone inside it. This results in users have to smack, jiggle, and jimmy their way around disinfect their device. So, be prepared for an arm workout.
It Can Be Too Big
Since it’s able to fit all types of devices, it’s no wonder that the PhoneSoap 3 is enormous. This has its pros and cons as carrying such a gigantic device around is not fun. Then again, the PhoneSoap 1 and 2 exist, which are much smaller. So, this isn’t much of an issue.
It’s Warranty isn’t That Thorough
We have to say, we’re not too fond of its warranty. It has quite the coverage, but it’s only for a year. This isn’t long enough as the PhoneSoap 3 is quite a complex device. Although it has many limitations to its warranty, this is normal.
The Return Period Is Questionable
You only get to return your product in the first 30 days of it being shipped to you. If it were the first 30 days of arrival we’d be pleased but imagine if it takes over 40 days for the product to get to you, and it’s broken? That’s a messy situation you probably don’t want to be in.
Let’s face it, you probably don’t wash your hands as much as you think you do, so your phone could be just filthy. Just thinking about all the bacteria on it should be reason enough to look for ways to sanitize it. Look no further as the PhoneSoap 3 is the best choice for you! It does a thorough job and most importantly, can disinfect all types of phones. You don’t even have to add a phone to it, as long as an object can fit in it, the PhoneSoap 3 will disinfect it.
Yes, it kills germs but as we mentioned, it only deals with “everyday” ones. So, something like the coronavirus would definitely be able to withstand its UV-C rays. That being said, studies have shown the ultraviolet radiation can affect SARS, a cousin of COVID-19.
Now, if you’re still worried about being exposed to UV-C rays, know that it’s been used as a disinfectant for a very long time. You’ll be pleased to know that it’s even used in hospitals, so you have nothing to worry about.
All in all, the PhoneSoap 3 is the best phone sterilizer on the market. It’s also the first, which is reason enough to purchase it. Let’s not forget that the PhoneSoap brand has quite the backstory, and is a product born out of the legendary TV Show, Shark Tank.
If not for the PhoneSoap 3, you should either check out its brothers, the XL, or PhoneSoap GO out.
Overall, you’re making a great investment as you’re securing your safety. We also went through the pros and cons of getting the device, and easily, the pros outweigh the cons. So, what’s stopping you from living a healthier life? If you need more encouragement, know that your phone is 18 times dirtier than a toilet. How does that make you feel?
