Basic Information About the Drill Press


Drilling press also referred drilling machine are used to bore holes, usually in hard substances, by continuous rotary action. There are many drill tools which range in size, cost and use but all works in similar manner. It consist of following parts.

Parts of drill press

It consist of a motor located at the rear of the machine, it drives a pulley connected to a spindle that rotates the bits. To adjust on speed depending on material it has stepped pulleys. drill press is fitted with special bits that can cut attractive rosette or square mortise in furniture workshop.

Quill stroke is distance that chuck travels vertically thus determining maximum hole depth they may vary in inches or more depending on type of machines. Quill lock allows the bits to be lowered to the items being worked on and held there while depth adjustments are being made.

Awl is used for piercing smaller holes. Gimlet consists of a cross handle metal shaft with a pointed screw and used also for boring small holes. The drill press have evolved over the years from the auger to complex types of drills which are Motor-powered, portable drill, to sophisticated use such as core drill used in minerals and rotary well drill used in oil mining.

Drilling procedures

  • Drill Operating Procedures include
  • Adjust speed, feed type and hole size depending on drill specification
  • Select bit size depending on drill gauge, chunk and drill shank
  • Ensure the drill bit is straight and tightened
  • Mark item drilled, clamp it in a vice and support the end with stand and align bit with marked item
  • Place the guard, lubricate material drilled and set drill speed depending on material and size of hole
  • Switch power on, apply lubricant on the bit, apply pressure on lever and reduce pressure as bit cuts the metal
  • After drilling the hole is release the lever slowly and turns off the power
  • When removing the item from vice ensure you careful due to underside bites
  • Remove drill, wash and store in safe place

Care and maintenance


It’s important it consist of moving parts and lot of heat is generated and without good lubrication would result to tool wear and tear. When lubricating individual should follow manufacturer’s instructions manual to properly lubricate the tools used. Users should clean machines after use e.g. T slots and bits grooves and wipe dirt from pulleys and belts. When cleaning chips they should be removed to avoid any damage of moving parts. Spindles and sleeves should be wiped dirt also to avoid damaging precision fit and rust.

When also operating machines care should be taken to avoid overworking the electric motor which may result to damage.

Special concern

When operating under adverse conditions care should be taken. E.g. in extremely dusty conditions they should operate at the slowest possible speed to avoid wear on the moving parts and often lubricate the machine. In very extreme cold conditions, machines should be started at a very slow speed and allowing the moving parts lubricants and warm up before escalating the speed. When extremely hot metal is brittle and so the users should avoid striking with hard tools.

Personal Safety

Drilling tools are unsafe hand operated equipments in the workshops. Safety procedures should be followed during drilling to reduce accidents, time loss and materials wastage. Some of safety procedures are.

1. Not support one self in the workplaces using hand. Holding devices should be used to prevent the work piece from movement from the operator’s hand.

2. Never adjust the machine parts while operating machine or while its running.

3. Use brush to clean chips not hands and when finished cleaning the oil them to avoid damage.

4. Never use loose clothes because they might cause accidents

5. Ensure cutting tools are running straight before operation starts.

6. Keep equipments and tools from operating table.

7. Keep guards locked and in place when operating.

8. Ease up on the feed as the drill breaks through the work to avoid damaged tools or workplaces.

9. Ensure all chuck keys and wrenches are removed before operating.

10. Wear protection and proper clothing when operating drill machines e.g ear muffs .
