Pros of Owning the NOVA 58000 Voyager DVR Drill Press

To help you make the best purchase, we’ll be comparing the pros and cons of owning the device.

It’s Powerful

It utilizes a 1.75 horsepower to drill through materials at 3000 RPM. If you’re not impressed with this, know that you can amp it up. The device is capable of drilling with 5500 RPM. If you decided to wire it to 220 V, you can boost its horsepower – it’ll go up to 2 HP.

Due its effectiveness, you’ll be able to work on all sorts of projects. You can even use specialty cutters on it. What kind of specialty cutters can it handle? Plug, Rosette, Forstner, Circle cutters and so much more. Its power levels and speeds are customizable, so this makes the job easier.

Accurate Performance

The 58000 Voyager is an accurate drill press, due to its direct drive system.  It utilizes an MCU software that allows for ample balance between power and speed – you get precise cuts. This gives you a soft start to keep things precise as well.

It has strong bearings. They cut through the toughest materials like butter. Strong split head casings allow it to enter through materials swiftly too.

You’re probably wondering what its single max run-out is – it is 0.04mm/.0015″.

Versatility

The drill works excellently on wood. According to Nova, wood is the material it was primarily made to drill. However, it’s such an accurate and powerful drill that it can handle all sorts of materials. Most notably, plastic, glass, tiles, and metals. It works on these as excellently as it does on wood.

Safety

As you can imagine, drills can be unsafe – you’re using tremendous force to pierce through tough surfaces. Many drill presses come with safety mechanisms. The Nova 5800 Voyager is no different. There is a tilt/vibration sensor in it. If it’s about to topple over, the sensors will turn it off. This makes the Voyager great to use if there are kids around.

The cherry on top is the fact that you can lock it. You’ll have a password so that you can only use it through authorized access. Many school clubs prefer to use the device because of this.

Save Power

You won’t have to worry about it eating up your electricity bill – it only uses as much power as it needs. The company says that it can save up to 50% of power that a normal motor would need.

Easy-To-Use

There is a bright LCD display in place. It not only is easy on your eyes, but its interface makes the device a breeze to navigate. Buttons are placed well, and its front is large enough so that it doesn’t look cluttered.

Cons

Now that you know all the benefits of picking it up, let’s look at its cons.

It’s Bulky

Remember that we said the machine weighed 307 pounds? That is some considerable weight that you might not be able to handle. It’s not only on the bulkier side, but has more height as well. It measures 18 inches across. So, setting it up might be a task.

Not Supported By Mac

The Nova 58000 will regularly update its firmware. Although it should update with Mac, several users have reported that it doesn’t. This leaves you with a drill press that isn’t as functional as it should be.

Customer Support Isn’t Good

Several users who have spoken to Nova customer support about the Mac firmware issue reported that they weren’t very helpful. When we tried contacting them, we realized that these claims were true – it seemed like their staff wasn’t trained well. Though they promised to get back to us, they never did. This isn’t an issue with the product, but if you ever have a problem with it, it might be difficult to get it sorted.

It’s Not Cheap

It’s not cheap. You’ll be picking it up for over $1000.

Final Thoughts

We believe the device is a drill press that is worth your time. Although it’s heavy, this isn’t the end of the world. The device is very customizable, and it lets you cut through a range of materials with superb accuracy. You may not like it, but you should appreciate how safe it is to use. Due to its tilt sensor, it’ll stop working if it ever topples over. It can also be locked to prevent kids from using the device – the Nova 5800 Voyager is very popular with clubs in schools.

Of course, it is a breeze to assemble. There is a comprehensive guide out of the box. Everything you need to assemble it is present and there are countless tutorials to follow.

One of the major problems we have with it is the firmware issue. Getting this sorted out is not the easiest either, as the Nova team is not helpful at times.
